You open the cabinet below the sink and find a thick layer of green dirt at the bottom of the angle valve. Maybe the handle has also become hard, or the slow dripping that wasn't there last month has now reappeared. This is corrosion at work, and it won't stop on its own. Once it starts, the situation will only get worse until the valve is completely damaged. But why does this happen? More importantly, can we really prevent it?

That green substance is copper oxide.

When you see the green substance on the surface of the corroded valve, it is actually copper oxide. Brass contains copper, and when it continuously comes into contact with water and oxygen, it undergoes a reaction, forming a rough green coating. This is just like the reason why old coins turn green. The problem is not just about the appearance - once the surface starts to corrode, the metal inside will be exposed, and the corrosion will penetrate further. A valve that looks intact on the outside may have gradually thinned from the inside, and these changes are invisible to the naked eye.

The chemical composition of water is the main culprit.

If the water quality in your area is hard - which is the case in many places - the minerals in it will accelerate the corrosion process. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on the valve surface, and these deposits trap water and adhere to the metal surface. It's like leaving the valve in a damp sponge all day long. Chlorine in treated water also erodes brass over time. If you have a water softener in your home, you will usually find that the valve has a longer lifespan; without one, the corrosion time will be shorter.

How to truly prevent this from happening

There are three things that are crucial. First, purchase solid brass valves with chrome or nickel plating - the coating acts as a barrier, separating the brass from moisture. Second, keep the area around the valve dry. If the cabinet below the sink leaks or gets damp, repair it promptly - a damp environment will eventually damage any valve. Third, rotate the valve by a quarter turn every few months to keep the internal structure functioning properly. Hard valves are prone to being squeezed, causing the seal to break, and a damaged seal allows water to seep in. A little maintenance can bring long-term benefits.
