Tips for Preventing Odor from Floor Drain

2026-07-01

In daily life, the unpleasant smell coming from floor drains is a common problem. This usually occurs due to the drying out of the water seal in the drain and the proliferation of bacteria in the pipes. To effectively prevent the floor drain from emitting unpleasant odors, no complex operations are required. Simply placing and replenishing the relevant substances can solve the problem at its root.

Clear water is the most basic and effective odor prevention substance. The accumulated water in the water trap of the floor drain can isolate the foul smell from the sewer. Regularly replenishing clear water to avoid the water seal from evaporating is the core method to eliminate the odor. For houses that are vacant for a long time, a small amount of edible oil can be poured on the water surface to lock in the moisture and delay evaporation, effectively blocking the odor from rising.

For daily cleaning, baking soda and white vinegar can be used in combination. After pouring them into the floor drain, they undergo a chemical reaction to decompose the oil, sludge, and impurities in the pipes, inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing the breeding of odors at the source. Regularly adding chlorine-containing disinfectant tablets can also kill microorganisms in the pipes and prevent the production of foul odors. Remember not to put laundry detergent, debris, etc., as they are prone to accumulate and block the pipes, exacerbating the odor problem. Keeping the floor drain clean can help you get rid of the odor problem for a long time.
